When God Becomes Blind

When God Becomes Blind

In those days, and in that time, saith the Lord,
The iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none;
And the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found:
For I will pardon them whom I reserve.
- Jeremiah 50:20

I ran across this verse last night and it completely floored me. I became awestruck at the awesome grace of God and though I had only seen a glimpse, I wanted the more!

If you have ever read the Old Testament, you would know that the people of God, the Israelites, were rebellious. It is the sin of our flesh that is in direct rebellion against the God that loves us. This is the miracle of the grace, the Gospel and the love of God.

God has reserved a chair for you

To say that Israel was sinless would be a lie, but to say that their guilty sin would not be found is a mystery. It is as if God had covered their sin. It is as if He removed the very offense for which they were responsible. The latter part of this verse says, “I will pardon them whom I reserve”. The only hope of the pardoning of our iniquities is the reservation that the Father initiates.

His wrath is imminent, but His grace is evident. His grace is now and His grace is present. He has reserved seating for the sinner at His table and we only need to attend. No longer are we required to offer sacrifices or burnt offerings as the cleanser of our sins, for they were never meant to be as such. (Hebrews 10:11). No penance and no amount of prayer. No attendance to church and no requirement of baptism. It is by grace we are saved (Ephesians 2:8).

It is unto His glory that our transgressions have been forgiven and our sin covered. There is no boasting of our own accord, to our own glory, but to Him that saved us. The glory belongs to the God who became blind to our sin and became sin for our blindness. It is He who has blotted out our transgressions, casting no judgement upon those that are apart of His Church, but casting it on His innocent Son (Isaiah 43:25).

How glorious is this God? How beautiful is His grace? How extravagant is His love towards us? To this question I answer, beyond what I can see.
